THE TOUR OF THE VILLAGE

A 2 km loop through medieval history, forests, and a 500-year-old oak tree
1 day
Trekking
SpringSummerAutumn
Moderate, with steep sections of descent and ascent

The “Tour of the Village” is a charming short-distance route that surrounds the medieval village of Montegrimano Terme, following an ancient historical trail once used before the arrival of paved roads to connect the village with the surrounding hamlets.

History and Restoration of the Path

Originally, when there were neither automobiles nor paved roads, Monte Grimano Terme could be reached from the hamlets of San Donato, Ca’Manente, and Ca’Mazza through this trail, immersed in the forest. Thanks to the work of the volunteers from Bike-Advisor, the path was restored and reopened in 2022, bringing back to light a communication route that is an integral part of the area’s history.

Technical Features of the Trail

Length: Approximately 2 kilometers

Type: Loop surrounding the village

Usage: Better suited for trekking than for MTB, due to the presence of a fairly steep descent and ascent

Recommended direction: Clockwise

Historical and Cultural Significance

The restoration of the “Tour of the Village” represents an important project for enhancing the local historical heritage. This trail is not just a hiking route, but a true time machine that allows you to walk along the same paths once used by the village’s inhabitants in past centuries.

The presence of the centuries-old oak, the small religious chapel, and the dry stone walls are testimonies to the rural life and social structure of the area before modernization. The trail passes through what was the ancient settlement of San Donato, one of the historical hamlets that surrounded the main village of Monte Grimano.

The “Tour of the Village” is an excellent opportunity to immerse oneself in nature and local history, following a short route that tells the story of centuries of mountain life and the connections between the scattered communities of the Montefeltro region.

SAN DONATO

The first part of the route requires particular attention, as it features a rather steep descent, both for pedestrians and cyclists. The path goes down for about 400 meters until reaching an ancient ruined village with a small chapel still clearly visible. This was part of the old settlement of San Donato. Some houses are still standing, but they are very unstable. Near the chapel stands an immense oak tree, estimated to be around 500 years old, a silent witness to the history of the place. Along the trail, the dry stone walls from that era are still visible, which once marked the boundaries of the land properties. Photographs from the early 1900s show that there was once no forest as there is today, but cultivated meadows that characterized the landscape.

CA' MAZZA

Continuing, keep to the right and climb a few hundred meters, passing through another forest toward the Ca'Mazza area. Here, the vegetation is denser, and the path gradually ascends the mountainside until reaching Ca'Mazza. From Ca'Mazza, the route continues along the paved road that leads back to the village of Monte Grimano Terme.
