In my opinion, Monte Grimano Terme is one of those “small but smart” villages that have understood where they can play their part in the future.
Clear strengths:
- Landscape and position: it is literally a balcony overlooking the Montefeltro, with a view stretching to the Adriatic and a green context (Sasso Simone and Simoncello Park) that is perfectly suited for trekking, cycling, slow walking, and “breathable” tourism.
- Medieval spiral layout: urbanistically, it is characteristic, recognizable, and “Instagrammable” – which helps tremendously in tourism communication and events spread throughout the historic center.
- Formal recognition: being among “I Borghi più Belli d’Italia” (The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy) is a seal of approval that assists in promotion, funding applications, and networking projects (Romantic Night, Borghi di Vino, etc.).
The “rebirth village” trend is also very interesting: the operation on the former Hotel Belvedere and the tenders to attract new entities demonstrate a strategic vision, not just nostalgia for the past. There is explicit talk of new hospitality immersed in the woods, sports tourism, and a human–nature balance: all of which effectively intercept post-pandemic trends (slow tourism, remote working at altitude, community hubs, etc.).
Limitations, which are partly opportunities:
- Very small scale: on its own, it cannot support large numbers; it must remain within territorial networks (Montefeltro, Valconca, Urbino–Rimini) and integrated packages.
- Accessibility and services: for a mature audience or digital nomads, shuttles, eco-friendly mobility, solid Wi-Fi, and venues that are “alive” year-round are necessary. If these are missing, the beauty of the village risks remaining incidental.
In summary Monte Grimano Terme is a village with a clear identity (wellness + nature + Middle Ages), already equipped with recognized brands and a strong narrative of rebirth. If it continues to work on territorial networks, experiential events, and new high-quality hospitality, it can become a very interesting small laboratory for the “village of the future” in the Montefeltro region.
