The story we want to share today is about an Albergo Diffuso that has brought life and tourism back to Isola Santa.
The village? A hidden paradise nestled beneath the peaks of the Alpi Apuane. In the 1950s, the peaceful life of the village’s inhabitants changed drastically due to the construction of a dam for hydroelectric exploitation of the Turrite Secca stream. The creation of an artificial reservoir submerged part of the village. Only the higher part of the village was spared, including the Church of San Jacopo and its bell tower.
Later, stability problems arose for the settlement, caused by the large daily fluctuations required by the electricity company managing the dam. By the mid-1970s, the last inhabitants of Isola Santa were able to secure safer housing elsewhere, and the village was completely abandoned.
The Rebirth of Isola Santa
In recent years, thanks to the area’s growing tourism—attracting visitors in every season—the village has come back to life. This was made possible through a major restoration project led by local residents and the former mayor of Careggine, Mario Puppa, which resulted in the recovery of several buildings and the creation of an Albergo Diffuso.
Monte Grimano Terme and the “Albergo Diffuso”
Monte Grimano Terme, fortunately, has never faced the challenges of Isola Santa. It boasts several beautiful, active accommodations and a strong, engaged community. However, after the closure of the thermal spa, the tourism sector suffered the most.
Now, with the rise of new tourism markets—active tourism, slow tourism, and cycle tourism—our area has become highly sought after, especially by foreign visitors. The historic center, which is the heart of the territory, still has some vacant houses. Who knows—perhaps one day, thanks to its strong community, Monte Grimano Terme could also become an Albergo Diffuso.
