Originally, when there were neither cars nor paved roads, Monte Grimano Terme could be reached from the hamlets of San Donato, Ca’Manente, and Ca’Mazza via a forest trail. Today, that path, now called the “Giro del Borgo”, has been brought back to life. Thanks to the volunteers from Bike-Advisor , it is possible to retrace this route, which is part of our territory’s history.
The trail starts from the Giardini Unità d’Italia in Monte Grimano Terme through a small wooden gate. The first part requires attention as it is somewhat steep for both walkers and bikers. After descending about 400 meters, you reach an old ruined village with a small chapel still clearly visible.
This was part of the ancient settlement of San Donato. Some houses still stand but are very unstable. Near the chapel stands an enormous oak tree, believed to be around 500 years old.
Continuing along the trail, you can still see the dry-stone walls that once bordered the path and separated it from farmland. It is thought that this area was once cleared fields rather than forest, as seen in early 1900s photographs.
Keep to the right and climb a few hundred meters, passing through another forest toward Ca’Mazza. Here, the vegetation is denser as you ascend the mountain slope until reaching Loc. Ca’Mazza, then continue on the paved road leading back to Monte Grimano.
The trail is about 2 kilometers long and is recommended to be done clockwise, with the utmost respect for nature and private property. It’s a great way to enjoy a peaceful walk immersed in the natural beauty of Monte Grimano.
